Frédérica Nature Reserve
Residents have direct access to the Frédérica Nature Reserve, which besides its exceptional landscapes, shelters unique and protected fauna and flora. Sprawling over 2,500 hectares, Frédérica is at an altitude of 400m above sea level and has a mixture of dry coastal forest and rain forest.
This estate, a former sugar cane plantation still with its old Chateau, has retained an unspoiled environment to explore. The exceptional views, the landscape of hills, plains and cascading waterfalls and the amazing biodiversity of flora and fauna (stags are bred here) all contribute to an experience that is in total harmony with nature.
Here one can find many botanical species, introduced by the colonists, medicinal plants, fruit trees, various shrubs as well as indigenous species such as ebony, wild apple, rosin, tambour (drum) wood and candlewood, black ebony...
As for the animal life, Frédérica shelters a large colony of fruit bats, which are the island's only indigenous mammals. There are over 2,000 deer (including 200 stags), wild boars, monkeys and tropical birds, including some "cateaux verts", a bird species threatened with extinction and of which there are now only 250 left on Mauritius.
